BAND
DIALOGUE V // BOISE

OVERVIEW

Band Dialogue is a site specific piece written for multiple bands to play simultaneously.  Each Band Dialogue is intended as a development upon or dialogue with the last. An exploration of space, sound, fun, loudness, community, and new creative possibilities.

This is Band Dialogue V and is arranged for 15 bands. We will be set up in Grove street (one block from the Main stage). See street plot for layout and your specific location.

The piece is very simple and easy to play for anyone with a bit of band experience. That said, if you can make a little time to familiarize yourself with the piece, listening to the examples and looking over the notes and voicings, it will be much easier to put all the pieces together and sound much better : )

Sometimes the bands will be individual, as in 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 etc..., sometimes they will be divided in groups of 3 as in A / B / C, and sometime into groups of 2 as in North (9-15) + South (1-8).

Guitars, basses, keyboards, samplers, horns, etc.. will move together with basses playing roots, and will be referred to in instructions simply as guitars.

Sometimes all guitars from all bands will do one thing, while all drums do something else.

Form: there is an intro and 5 movements. Movement 1 has 2 parts.

I will conduct and cue all changes and will try to always count 1…..2…..1,2,3,4 cue.

MOVEMENT 2

*****GUITARS+Melodic Instruments******

This is the melody for Movement 2

Please listen to this melody and learn the fingerings:

North Guitars Play: D E G

South Guitars Play: A C# D F#

Everyone will always only play one note at a time. We will always alternate from group North to South, and cycle over and over again, following cues for every note. So I will cue North (1 note), South (1 note), North(1 note), South (1note), etc, etc....In this case that would be cue North (D), South (A), North (E), South (C#), and so on.....

On cue the melody begins slowly - a loose time, but every note is always cued, and you always stay in order of your 3 or 4 note pattern. The melody has 3 phases.

        1. D A E C# G D D F#

        2. E A G C# D D

        3. E F# G A D C# E D G F# D

In this demo, North Guitars are panned to the left speaker, South panned to the right speaker. So north guitars on the left repeat their 3 note figure, while South Guitars on the right repeat their 4 note figure.

MOVEMENT 3

****DRUMS*****

Please learn this rhythm.

Drums begin Movement 3. First Group B, then adding groups A+C, then all of A,B,+C together.

In this demo Group B drums are panned hard left and groups A+C are panned hard right.

Guitars in Movement 3 are divided into North and South. In this demo, North Guitars are panned Left and South Guitars panned Right.

Movement 4

These are simple octave voicings that will be played in a tremolo style. The first 6 are played by all groups, then we split into Group B and Groups A+C for the following voicings.
